I don’t want to dwell too much longer on Saturday’s disappointing defeat away at Dulwich Hamlet. It was against my better judgement that I bought a ticket in the first place, but you have to support your team whatever.
It was a strange afternoon all round really. I can’t recall ever before going to an away game where there has been a crowd of well over 2,000 and yet the vast majority of them appeared to only be vaguely interested in the goings on. A significant percentage of the home ‘support’, despite having the hats, scarves, badges, etc., seemed blissfully unaware that there was a football match going on. It had the feel of a massive open air pub, but one that charged £12 to get in to see and chat with your friends. All a little bizarre.

But don’t get me wrong, I’m not criticising Dulwich Hamlet. They are obviously doing something right. It is obvious that they have engaged the local community in a really positive way and they in turn have responded in numbers. And they spend their money too, mostly on beer, once they’re in the ground whether that be in the incredibly efficient club bar or at one of the food and drink points dotted around the ground. Our club should duly take note.
I just hope that Dulwich invest some of their income in improvements to the ground itself. Unless you’re in the main stand, which of course we weren’t, there’s hardly a decent vantage point to be had. Mind you, at some points on Saturday, that was something of a blessed relief…
